History of the Beecher Fire Department and the Beecher Fire Protection District
A committee was appointed by the Village Board on June 20, 1884, to form the nucleus of what is now known as the Beecher Fire Protection District. The first fire company was formed in January 1887 with Henry Hack as the fire marshal. The fire company consisted of 24 volunteers. The village purchased a fire engine hand pump and hose cart with 500 feet of hose, which is now in the Washington Township Museum. The first fire station was on the east side of Gould Street between Penfield and Indiana. Money was raised for the equipment by hosting the first Firemen's Dance. Later that year a steel fire alarm bell was purchased.
On April 21, 1911, the first meeting to organize the volunteer fire department was held, officials were elected and three companies were formed. C. B. Eskilson was chief and the three captains were William Bielfedt, William Boderias and Henry Wehmhoefer. The Beecher Volunteer Fire Department raised money to fund the fire department by sponsoring the first 4th of July Celebration in 1913. The fire department hosted the celebration until 2000 when the 4th of July Commission was formed to continue the tradition.
In May of 1973, the Beecher Fire Protection District was formed in order to levy taxes for the entire district.
The current fire station was built in 1987 by the Beecher Fire Protection District and the Beecher Volunteer Fireman's Association. Currently, the fire station is manned 24/7.
