Residential Knox HomeBox Lease Program

Residential Knox HomeBox Program

The Beecher Fire Protection District is committed to helping residents remain safe and independent in their homes. The Residential Knox HomeBox Program provides eligible residents with a secure emergency access system that allows firefighters and paramedics to enter a home quickly during an emergency without causing unnecessary damage.

The program is designed for individuals who live alone or have medical, physical, or mobility challenges that could prevent them from opening the door during an emergency.

How the Program Works

During a fire, medical emergency, or other situation requiring immediate access, first responders may need to enter a home quickly. Without a secure access system, emergency crews may be forced to delay entry or damage a door or window to gain access.

The Knox HomeBox provides a safe and secure solution. The HomeBox is a heavy-duty metal lockbox that hangs over the top of the home's front entry door. A house key is securely stored inside the box and is accessible only to the Beecher Fire Protection District using a specialized Knox key system. This allows emergency personnel to enter the home quickly while helping avoid unnecessary property damage and delays in care.

Program Guidelines

  • The Knox HomeBox is available on a 6-month lease for $30, payable in advance.
  • If the lease is terminated before the end of the 6-month term, the lease fee is non-refundable.
  • At the end of the initial lease period, participants may either:
    • Purchase their own Knox HomeBox, or
    • Renew the lease for one additional 6-month period for $30.
  • At the conclusion of the second 6-month lease period, the HomeBox must be returned to the Beecher Fire Protection District.
  • The Knox HomeBox remains the property of the Beecher Fire Protection District and is leased only for use at the address listed on the application.
  • The HomeBox must remain installed on the primary front entry door.
  • Participants must provide the Fire District with a current working key to the residence.
  • If exterior door locks are changed at any time, participants are responsible for notifying the Beecher Fire Protection District and providing an updated key immediately.
  • The HomeBox must be returned if the participant moves from the residence or no longer requires the program.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Residential Knox HomeBox Program, applicants must:

  • Reside within the boundaries of the Beecher Fire Protection District.
  • Have a temporary or permanent medical, physical, or mobility condition that may prevent them from unlocking or opening the door during an emergency. Examples include:
    • Recovery from surgery or hospitalization.
    • Limited mobility or physical disability.
    • Chronic medical conditions.
    • Individuals awaiting placement in an assisted living or skilled nursing facility.
  • Complete and submit a Residential Knox HomeBox Program application.
  • Sign the Knox HomeBox Lease Agreement and comply with all program requirements.

Purchase Your Own Knox HomeBox

Residents who require long-term emergency access or prefer to own their HomeBox may purchase one directly from Knox Company. When ordering, be sure to select the Beecher Fire Protection District as your responding fire department so the HomeBox is keyed to the District's secure master key system.
